Selous Game Reserve - Unspoilt Wilderness
The
Selous is Africa’s largest Game Reserve,
an area bigger than Denmark or Switzerland. The
Reserve supports vast numbers of wild animals; 200,000
buffalo, 30,000 elephant (more than half the country’s
population), and 80,000 wildebeest, as well as one
of the healthiest population of African Wild Dog.
Apart from its abundant wildlife,
Selous also has a rich variety of birdlife
and is home to the black rhino.
Selous’ vast landscape includes the Rufiji,
a labyrinth of waterways and sand banks lined with
huge crocodiles, and herds of elephants and buffalo. The Reserve was named after Frederick Courtenay
Selous; a 19th century hunter and soldier in the
1920s, who is also buried in the Reserve. A truly
vast wilderness with spectacular game drives and
boat trips down the Rufiji River.
Fall asleep at night in this World Heritage
site to a chorus of grunting hippos, crickets
and roars from afar.
