Bagamoyo

Bagamoyo
is located 75kms north of Dar Es Salaam , the Name
Bagamoyo is derived from the Swahili language –Bwagamoyo-
“here I lay down my heart”. It is disputed
however whether the term Bagamoyo referred to the
slaves that passsed through or the porters who rested
in Bagamoyo after carrying heavy loads on their shoulders.
It contains the Kaole ruins, remnants of two mosques
and a few tombs which date back to the 13th century,
up until mid 18th century Bagamoyo was a small
trading centre, trading mainly in fish, salt and
gum. Later Bagamoyo then became a trading port for
ivory and the slave trade. with traders coming in
from as far as Morogoro, Lake Tanganyika and Usambara
on their way to Zanzibar. The chapel
next to the village museum is where Livingstone’s
body was laid before being transported to Westminster
Abbey for burial.
Bagamoyo is a town full of old memories; the coastline
contains some of the most beautiful sandy white
beaches. Today it is known as a centre for Dhow
boat sailing.
