Pangani
Tanga
is Tanzania’s second largest port and
third largest town after Dar es Salaam.
This old German colonial town is
famous for its sisal and is an ideal place to stop-over
en route to Mombassa. Excursions from Tanga include
trips to Toten Island, which has ruins of a mosque
and the Amani Botanical Gardens, situated in the
Usambara Mountains.
Pangani is a small fishing village 55km south of
Tanga and is located where the Pangani River empties
into the Indian Ocean. The river has a passenger
ferry which crosses to the north side of the village.
The scenic winding river, fringed with mangroves,
is also rich in birdlife and crocodiles.
The lodges here offer excellent snorkeling
in the clear waters of the Indian Ocean and trips
to Maziwe Island, located just 10km offshore.
