Pemba Island
Pemba island lies to the northeast of Zanzibar. Though
relatively less visited by tourists, Pemba has a more
undulating landscape and is more densely vegetated
in natural forest and plantation. There are many attractive
beaches and some historical ruins dating to the Shirazi
era. Pemba is also famous in Tanzania for traditional
medicine and witchcraft. Pemba is easily accessible
by air from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam and Tanga. There
are also speedboat transfers available from Zanzibar.
Places to Visit
Pemba is famous for diving and snorkeling
tours and is also preferred by honeymooners. Sightseeing
trips are also possible in the small towns of Chake
Chake, Mkoani and Wete. Excursions include visits
to Ras Mkumbuu Ruins, Mesali Island, Pujini Ruins
and Ngezi Forest Reserve.
